Watt's engine offered a number of advantages over Newcomen's atmospheric engine. It was more:
- powerful (it was double-acting and the torque was constantly available)
- efficient (it consumed less fuel and water)
- reliable (repairs were not needed so frequently)
- practical (because it could be made smaller and produced rotational motion)
